WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BELIEVE?

Enjoying more C.S. Lewis from chapter 4 of Mere Christianity.  Lewis isn't the easiest read out there, but he uses great illustrations that help our understanding.

"A man can eat his dinner without understanding exactly how food nourishes him.  A man can accept what Christ has done without knowing how it works.  Indeed, he certainly would not know how it works until he has accepted it."

Fallen man is not simply an imperfect creature who needs improvement: he is a rebel who must lay down his arms.  Laying down your arms, surrendering, saying you are sorry, realizing that you have been on the wrong tract and getting ready to start life over again from the ground floor - that is the only way out of the "hole" man is in.  This means killing part of yourself, undergoing a kind of death.

The same badness which makes us need a "way out" makes us unable to do it.  Can we do it if God helps us?  Yes.

More Lewis comments next week.
