AIRPORT HIKE

We are planning a trip to the airport sometime this summer.  Not to catch a flight or pick up a passenger.  Just to hike around the airport.

Hiking at an airport?  Actually, it's a lot more pleasant than it sounds.  Baltimore Washington airport has a 12 mile paved trail around the entire perimeter and many sections are surprising peaceful, despite the close proximity to the airport.  The trail passes through woods and wetlands which still coexist with the airport.

With jets flying right above their head the average hiker takes about 4 hours to circle the airport. Runners, joggers, walkers, rollerbladers and bikers share the trail and there are places to eat food and ice cream; even a bike repair shop!

A few years ago my wife and I stayed at a hotel in Rhode Island.  When we saw our room was right next to the local airport tarmac we didn't expect to get much sleep.  And we were right, but we stayed awake because of the fascinating view just outside our hotel window, not because of noise. The planes came so close you could see the passengers, and in the morning we didn't want to leave.

Anyway, visiting the BWI trail will be our attempt to recapture this memory.
